In 1994 Arleen and Henry Stubbs formed the first youth group in their small rural church plant in South Carolina. While praying about how to make Jesus relevant to the youth, both felt God calling them to involve the youth in some form of foreign missions to people less fortunate then themselves. They soon received an invitation for the youth group to help build a church and assist with outreach for Jesus in Chile, South America.
Returning from their second mission project in Chile in 1997, the group received an unexpected call to build a church and share the gospel in the mountainous regions of central Cuba. For the next twelve years the youth continued building churches and sharing the gospel in Cuba, becoming known as World Youth Group (WYG). Moved by the tremendous needs surrounding them while at the same time disappointed by the seemingly small impact of their efforts, a week was set aside to fast and pray for God’s leading in this ministry. During that week, they were deeply impressed their non-profit 501(c)3 must launch an entirely different, four fold, approach to ministry in Cuba;
1) Training Cuban youth in a 1 month “LIGHT” school to relieve suffering, serve the disenfranchised, and minister Christ’s healing love
2) Sending and supporting graduates to go, live among, and serve the needs of “the least of these” in the unreached “regions beyond”
3) Coordinating mission opportunities for individuals and organizations to help with cultivating and harvesting decisions for Christ
4) Housing, nurturing, and establishing precious new flocks of believers where previously there have been none
Through the amazing support of a handful of individuals sharing this vision to reach all of Cuba for Christ, 100 Gospel workers now carry forward the practical medical missionary gospel of Jesus full-time in 44 Cuban cities and hundreds across America joining WYG on short term mission projects, experience the power of the Gospel to transform lives on this Island nation.
We give thanks and praise to God for the great things He is doing. We, at the same time, shudder at the magnitude of the remaining needs. We invite you to pray with us that every city in Cuba will come to see and know Christ’s mercy and the saving power of His grace.
